The Importance Of SCORM Compliant LMS For Your E-learning Solution

E-learning is now growing to be a highly popular method of teaching employees new things, and of furthering employee education to ensure business growth. E-learning does not only involve placing employees in front of a computer and giving them software and learning modules through an online environment. It can also entail engaging employees in classroom discussions and conventional lectures, and then supplementing these traditional learning methods with multimedia such as audio or video files. E-learning is electronic learning: by integrating the advantages of the Internet and the digital world, it is believed that people can learn faster and easier without leaving the comfort of their offices. E-learning, however, is not as easy as it seems. Because most learning modules are delivered through online means, they are also viewed through the Internet and on computer screens. This also means that the attention span of people who view such modules and software is only a fraction of that which they would otherwise have if they were reading a book or doing brick-and-mortar schoolwork. According to studies, people need to be caught and attracted in the first fifteen seconds of their acquaintance with an e-learning module – if an e-learning course designer or creator does fails to do this, an e-learning module will be for nothing. In addition to attractive design, the contents of an e-learning module must be easy to understand, and must deliver knowledge in the shortest time possible. It must also be designed well enough to fit accessibility standards: not all e-learning participants and students will have conventional learning capacities. An e-learning module must be able to cater even to the needs of the blind or deaf; it should be designed so that it can be read with common screen readers, which are used by the visually impaired; and it should also be designed with the interests of time in mind. Not all e-learning participants have all the time in the world to engage in e-learning, so modules have to be designed so that learning is completed in a fixed amount of time. E-learning modules are delivered through the use of an LMS, or learning management system. An LMS is a software bundle that functions in delivering e-learning content to e-learning participants. An LMS also allows e-learning creators and organizers access to e-learning participants’ accounts, and can allow e-learning creators and organizers to make changes to the e-learning modules at any time, and at their own pace. In order to cater to the widest variety of people, an LMS must also be certified by the U.S. Department of Defense as being SCORM compliant. The SCORM, or Sharable Content Object Reference Model, is a set of standards and software specifications that control the quality of products and services devoted to web-based e-learning. The SCORM standards function to control the qualities of the run-time environment, which consists of correct collaboration between the e-learning client or content provider, and the host system. This run-time environment is controlled, in turn, by the LMS, which entails that LMS software must be of the highest quality in order to provide the best e-learning service. The designs and functions of an LMS will depend largely on what the e-learning module will be used for. In general, however, an LMS can allow e-learning creators and organizers to generate documents and reports that function in making e-learning better and more efficient. This can include the creation of course calendars, custom-designed curriculums, scores and grade sheets, coursework, and reports on individual students. In all these things, an LMS must be SCORM certified: SCORM certification can mean that the LMS is compatible with a wide variety of software and browsers, and can thus be used by a greater number of people. SCORM standards are XML-based, and these standards are often sought after by e-learning creators and producers, as they translate into high quality products that can not only sell better, but benefit more e-learning participants. For more information on SCORM standards, do research on current trends in e-learning. Look for the SCORM certification when searching for e-learning modules that you might want to use for your home or office. With SCORM certification, you can be sure that the products you are after can help you best.
