Characteristics of an Ideal LMS System

Availability – Can your LMS system vendor ensure that your website will provide sufficient bandwidth at any time of the day? Will your website be able to handle incoming traffic if administrators, trainers, students, and other concerned parties all log in at the same time? What’s the connection speed used by your server?

Compatibility – Your LMS system should be compatible with as many other software applications to allow your teachers to teach in different methods and prevent your students or trainees from abandoning their training. At the least, your LMS system should be based on open industry rules and support major learning types like IEEE, IMS, SCORM, and AICC.

Scalability – If your membership count increases, will it be easy to upgrade your LMS system? Is it easy to add new features to your website? If you need additional hard disk space to store and serve content, can your LMS system be made to handle your growing demands?

Security – This is highly important because most LMS systems contain sensitive information that should never be placed in the wrong hands. What safety and security measures have been implemented for your LMS system? Can certain parts of your LMS system be selectively restricted? Can restrictions be content and time-based?

Stability – Will it be able to run round the clock without suffering from any downtime? Does the LMS system have backup batteries to rely on in case of power failures?

User-Friendliness – No matter how great your courses are, they can’t be appreciated by your students or trainees if the LMS system isn’t user-friendly. The control panel and navigation links and buttons must be both easily seen and understood. Pacing, the type of instructional method, and other customizable aspects of the content must be changeable according to the student’s preferences.
